The only tools needed to perform this operation are a screwdriver (Phillips or flat blade, depending on what kind of screws are on the back of the tower), and the CD drive that is being installed.
1.) The first step is to make sure the computer is shut down, and remove all the cables from the back of the tower.
2.) Take the screwdriver and remove all the screws holding the computer cover in place. Be sure not to lose any of these screws, for you will need them to put the cover back on.
3.) Remove the cover. It may take some wiggling in order to remove it, depending on what kind of tower you are working with. When taking a computer cover off, it is crucial that you have a good ground in order to avoid shock and damage computer parts.
Note: Attached to the CD drive are three cables – the power supply, the IDE cable, and the auxiliary sound cable. The auxiliary sound cable is used to play songs from the CD to the speakers. Many computers are built differently, so other parts may be needed to be removed before accessing these drives. But be sure you know what you are removing and how to put it back if this has to be done. A good idea is to take some digital photographs of the way things are laid out and connected before you start.
4.) Remove the three cables from the drive. If there are additional screws
holding the drive in, these will need to be removed also.
5.) Once there is nothing attached to it, remove the drive and set it to the side.
6.) Take the good CD drive (the one you are installing) and set it in the place of the other one.
7.) Attach the necessary screws if there are any, and then attach the power supply and IDE cable in the necessary slots. Make sure that the red stripe on the IDE cable is closest to the power supply.
8.) Once this is accomplished, all that is left is the reassembly of the tower. If you removed anything in order to access the drive, make sure that this is put correctly back in place.
9.) Put the computer cover back on, and put the screws back in their place.
10.) The final step is to reattach all the cables, and boot up the computer
and see if it works. If it does, then you are successful, but if it doesn’t
work, then something else may be the problem and additional trouble shooting
will be needed.
